American Express keeps your previous two years of transactions available to view and download online, and makes older statements available as an archived PDF. What American Express lets you download today

American Express's own FAQ says your previous two years of transactions can be viewed electronically, and downloaded as a PDF, Excel or CSV file.

When to convert the PDF instead

Once you're past Amex's two-year electronic window, waiting on an archived statement request, or catching up a year or more of bookkeeping from statements a client handed you, the PDF statement is what you actually have to work with.

QuickBooks Online can extract some PDF and image bank statements directly, and Xero can import a PDF bank statement for eligible US and Canadian organizations, excluding Xero Ledger. Either is a reasonable first stop for a recent, clean American Express PDF you're entering for the first time. Arkrel is built for the harder cases: years of older American Express statements, a mix of scanned and digital files, several statements at once, or any PDF you want checked against its own printed balances before it goes into your books.

Every statement checked before you download

Arkrel doesn't need a American Express template. It reads the transaction table in any bank's PDF and checks the arithmetic before you can download anything: the opening balance, plus every credit, minus every debit, must equal the closing balance, and on a statement that prints a running balance, each row must follow from the one before it. A statement that fails either check is still exported when you ask for it, but the download is marked, and the dashboard or free tool shows exactly which check failed and on which line.

Does Arkrel work with American Express statements specifically?

Yes. Arkrel reads the transaction table in any bank's PDF, so it doesn't depend on a American Express template: upload a American Express statement, checking, savings or credit card, and it checks the opening balance, every credit and debit, and the closing balance the same way it checks any bank's PDF.

What if I only have a scanned or photographed statement?

That works the same way. Arkrel processes a scanned or photographed statement the same as a digital PDF, and runs the same balance checks either way.

My American Express transactions are older than two years. What are my options?

American Express's own FAQ documents two years of electronic transaction access, with archived PDF statements available online within 24 hours of your request. Once you have the PDF, whether recent or archived, Arkrel converts it the same way.
