How it works

1. 1Upload the statement PDF, digital or scanned, from any bank.
2. 2Arkrel totals every row against the opening and closing balance printed on the statement, including each running balance where printed.
3. 3Download QuickBooks CSV, Xero CSV, OFX, Excel, CSV or JSON, with any reconciliation mismatch shown. The results identify the affected transaction numbers when running-balance checks locate them.

What American Express lets you download today

• American Express's own FAQ says your previous two years of transactions can be viewed electronically, and downloaded as a PDF, Excel or CSV file.

When to convert the PDF instead

Once you're past Amex's two-year electronic window, waiting on an archived statement request, or catching up a year or more of bookkeeping from statements a client handed you, the PDF statement is what you actually have to work with.

QuickBooks Online can extract some PDF and image bank statements directly, and Xero can import a PDF bank statement for eligible US and Canadian organizations, excluding Xero Ledger. Choose an import route for your American Express statements based on the files and account history you need to add. If you choose Arkrel, you can prepare years of older American Express statements, a mix of scanned and digital files, several statements at once, or any PDF whose rows you want totaled against its own printed balances before it goes into your books.

Statement arithmetic before you download

Arkrel doesn't need a American Express template. It totals every row against the opening and closing balance printed on the statement. Where a running balance is printed, it also reconciles each extracted row with the preceding row. The results show any mismatch in our reading. The results identify the affected transaction numbers when running-balance checks locate them.
